My high school reunion was this past weekend. Two nights were spent among faces, aged a little, from the past. I have been telling people that I found the social divisions intact and that I learned how many people I really did not know. It was a large class, over 500 people at least; it would be difficult to know a significant portion of them all. Toward the end I noticed that several people I would've liked to have seen were not even present. I bought a Pee-Chee and took it to the reunion for people to sign. It was a hit, and a fun thing to do. I tried to use it to approach people who were unapproachable in high school, but those groups were still that way, clinging tightly to each other in little huddles of conversation. I did have one fantastic day with my friend Krafty, however. Years gone by since we've played together. He's living back east now, happily married and awaiting fatherhood. I picked him up at the airport and we passed the night catching up on each other's truths. But the next morning our youth was ebullient again and we goofed around the entire day. Driving fast in his rental car, playing loud music. Joking around like teenage boys. Talked movies and music and fitness and history and nothing at all but silliness. We stopped by the elementary school we attended together, just to see how big we've grown. Laid flat onto the Four-square squares, head to head, to take a snapshot for remembering. |
