Things took a turn for the better last night as soon as Dave popped in the door, which was just when I was trying to upload yesterday's entry onto an unconscious server. He was loaded with hugs and kisses, and everybody knows they make things feel better.
We settled in for refried beans, salsa, rice, and chips. Mmm…. After the swelling went down, we started carving pumpkins. The local variety are really round and squished so that there really isn't much height to work with. I think they'd be great for those really elaborate carved murals people sometimes attempt. However we're not ever up for those, so we freehanded a couple of faces that were just a step up from traditional triangles. It was 10:30pm by this time and we wanted to share our new masterpieces with the world at large so we hauled them down to the front door of our building and perched them on the little brick wall corralling the bush garden. To avoid confusion, I put out a little white sign saying, "Happy Halloween."
As we stood back a few steps to admire our creations, our neighbor, Mr. Kim, approached in a zombie-like state. I told him "Hi" but he didn't hear. When he got right up to us he jerked alive and said, "Oh! Hi!" He was just coming home from work, apparently, and he said this was his normal return time. Nice job ya got goin' there buddy. We exchanged a few words about Halloween with him and then we all went upstairs. We planned to retrieve the jack o' lanterns later.
It was late though, and I'm sure that the only people seeing the orange glowing orbs were salary guys coming home drunk. They probably didn't even notice. I went down around midnight and silently applauded our little jacks for still going strong, but noticed that someone had taken off with the sign. That's weird. Maybe they took it to look up the word "Halloween" in their dictionary? At first I thought that it was the wind or something, so I looked all over the area and didn't see the sign anywhere. On the way back up with the pumpkins, I checked the mailbox and it was empty also.
This morning on our way out the door I noticed something sticking out of our mailbox so I went to check it and discovered it was the sign. THAT was really strange. Oh well.
We were just going to go out for a little while today so Dave could look for some gloves and so we could check out a new software store downtown. We wanted to be back early for the Korea-Japan World Cup soccer preliminaries, or whatever it was.
We narrowly missed our bus for Itaewon (gloves) so we decided to just go downtown. The new software store was way cool for Korea - it felt like an American store. Then we trotted over to Insa-dong and had lunch and then tea in a traditional type house with way too many tourists. Probably won't go there again. Didn't mean to do any shopping, but we ended up buying a couple of tea cups and a tray, then some incense. At the store with the incense there are these hilarious little ceramic penises on key rings. I always want to buy one, but I can't justify springing $6 for one - I mean, they are small. It's not like I'd put my keys on it, so it would just hang around somewhere and become unnoticed. Offhand, I can't think of anyone to send it to who would really get a kick out of it. So for now, I'm just skipping it. Do you want one?
By the time we got out of Insa-dong it was 3:30 and the game was half over. Oops. We got home around 5:30, made mac&cheese and had (sh)lonx for dessert. Mmm. Can't wait till we finish the box; those things are making my pants tight!
We lit the jacks again and I set them up in the spare room, in the dark with the door closed, and took time exposures. Dave and I got in on a few shots with lights under our chins. I'm sure they'll look silly, especially since I couldn't stop smiling and blinking. We decided against putting them downstairs and instead set them on top of the condenser for the air conditioner that hangs outside of our living room window. I went downstairs and looked at them from the ground, but they were hard to see, so we just bagged the whole exhibition thing and brought them inside for our own enjoyment. We dimmed the lights and put on some traditional Korean music we bought today that we quickly discovered wasn't that great. That's another one for the storage box.
Hmm… I'm getting hungry again. Could there be another (sh)lonx in the box?
