Election Day on this Indiana-sized half of the Korean peninsula. It’s a holiday. And you know, I’m really wondering why election days are not holidays in the States? I mean, having to work on election day sends out the message that the election is not important. It’s just like all those holidays when you still have to work or go to school. Those are NOT the important holidays, obviously, and they really don’t have that much meaning unless you get to dress funky or celebrate at night. But the days you get off, those are the ones you keep track of weeks in advance! So, see, if Americans had election day off there would be no excuse for not voting, and the importance of the behavior would be acknowledged. Maybe.
We can’t vote here so we just played. How convenient.
Well, we didn’t really play. Decided to go to Itaewon for a little X-mas shopping, but ended up not buying anything. We were really hungry for lunch when we got there, but we couldn’t even make up our minds about what to eat. We wandered up and down the street until we finally decided to try out Pizza Hut. We made the right choice. Afterward, we went to McDonalds for a sundae. Woo…wee. Super-duper excitement.
On the bus ride home, I saw a big banner-type sign hanging in a store window proclaiming, "Marry X-mas." I love it; I wanna marry it! If I can bother myself enough to do it, I’ll go back and take a photo to send to the Far Eastern Economic Review’s "Travellers’ Tales" page. Yeah, that’s Travellers’ with two ‘l’s. Must be a British thing. Or maybe a Microsoft spellchecker thing?
