03.29.2009 | Oh the challenges of letting things go too long

Agh! Forgot I still needed to write something here today.

This weekend I planned to run all the errands I need to complete before we leave for Germany. I gave it a shot, but I wasn't able to cross off most things from the list. Places didn't have things I needed (e.g., socket adaptors) or they had already closed by the time I got there. S'okay. There's still time.

I was able to find some Shoe Goo to patch my tennis shoes, which have worn through from all the walking to and from work. The Shoe Goo package is concise, but what it does say is serious. Apparently, the stuff contains some megacarcinogen that causes birth defects. Half of the instructions describe the conditions in which you should do the work. I almost didn't purchase the goo because I didn't want to risk exposure, but then I thought that it would be dumb to toss the shoes when they could be repaired. Besides, the rule with the toxic stuff is: do what the instructions say to do. So, today, in the surprisingly bright spring day, I took the shoes out back with big heavy gloves, a roll of paper towels, and the tube of goo. I laid out everything on the sidewalk and rotated around until I was up wind from the workspace. Once everything was positioned, I tore open the package, punctured the seal on the tube, and went to town frosting the shoes with the bad bad stuff. It was sticky and a little fun. When the bottoms of the shoes were black shiny, I folded up the goo and its applicator stick in its original packaging and leaned the shoes against the building, between two potted plants where they couldn't be noticed and subsequently stolen. I barely smelled a fume.

I sure hope the stuff works. I really like the shoes and I don't want to get a new pair. But the shape they're in now, I can't wear them on wet sidewalks or my feet get wet.

Exciting, I know, but that's exactly the kind of thing that is good to do on a Sunday. Other things I accomplished: Emptied the compost bin—ewww, long overdue—took out the recycling, and washed and put away the Xmas tree stand (finally). Mighty satisfying.

OH, and I downloaded Wolfenstein 3-D for my iphone. Id did a nice job porting it. Game play is pretty smooth and surprisingly fun. You can even kill the game suddenly and when you return to it it's right where you left it.
