10.13.2007 | Lil Helen visits the wicked witch of the east

Caption on the back: Tex, Helen, Little Helen & Pearl (Tex's sister) around Christmas tree. A Washington fir.

A year or so before my gma died she took the heap of family photos and sorted them into bags, one bag for each of her children, so that each would receive a bagful of photos of themselves, their children, and the occasional friend. I got my mother's bag, with photos from her childhood up till the time that her life overlapped with mine and on into my growing up.

I'm the type of person who carefully organizes and catalogs photos. All of my own photos are neatly placed into albums, labeled with the date and who or what is in the picture. This compulsion may, in fact, occur in direct reaction to the disorganization of the rest of the family photos. Whatever the case, I don't quite know what to make of this bag, this tangle of time and people, so it has remained just as I received it and has stayed where I stuffed it in the back of the cabinet where the photo albums live.

On a whim, Andrew replaced that scanner I bought when I was living in Seoul with something modern. Honestly, it's one of the best surprises in a while and it's been one of those things that you do and you wonder why you didn't do it long ago. So, I started to think about all the photos I have that I don't have digital copies of, and I thought of that bag. Lots of things in there to scan.

I used this new power to post the photos of the road trip I took in 2001. The newly multimedia entries start here.
