So my MP3 player arrived today. And hooo! What a tiny piece of magic! Imagine music clearer than you can perceive it and a machine making you hear it like that. Yeah. Tonight I even had to run for the bus just to test it out and -nothing- just relentless continuity. I haven't been this happy with a gadget since 1983 when Sony came out with a Walkman that was the same size as a cassette tape even with the AM/FM radio; and I wore that thing over every waistband bike riding and whatever, dropping it one too many times but sending it back in for repairs until one time it was just too far gone. But now, this MP3 business is the materialization of portable dreams. This is what I wished for then only I didn't know it. So I've been downloading like crazy. Boss thought I was working late I'm sure but really I was in there pulling down MP3s and looking for B&Bs (for the upcoming weekend). Earlier in the day I went for a walk along the water trying it out. In the middle of a crosswalk a guy stepped to the front like he was saying things but there was no sound coming from his mouth. I moved to remove the headphones and when I did he started YELLing at me: IS THAT AN MP3 PLAYER!? I said yeah, why, are you going to try to steal it from me? He said no I just want to buy one. So we moved curbside for a conversation wherein it become quickly apparent that I know much delightful much about these little toys. So of course I went to the gym even though I went climbing yesterday. I mean, how could I not just use this for that? And so I did and it was packed because it's Monday and there were only the smells of moving parts, all of it various fabric softeners, if you can believe it. It was great and short but the walk to the bus was fast as the beat and distortionless; I don't remember the walk or the time it took to do it. And on the bus I used the special powers of the device once more to ward off one of the freaky men who started moving his mouth at me and I pretended he was mute, which he may as well have been. He grew bored and went away. So then I came home and my ethernet hub was waiting for me, and it's because the laptop has USB and the desktop doesn't but the desktop is the only one hot. It will be different now. |
